Maud, Rock Star

When she was tiny—a year and a half or so—she wasn’t doing much talking. So one day we were driving in the car in L.A., and I was singing, “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” to her, and I sang, “I’ve been working on the railroad, all the livelong….,” and I left off there and turned to her, like “Hit it, Maudie,” and she sang, “..day.” I smiled and I sang, “I’ve been working on the railroad, just to pass the time a…,” and she sang, “…Way.” I said to her, “I knew you could talk,” and she smiled at me, like, “Yeah, well.”

For a little while after that, we talked by singing. “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” was a big one: She filled in “ballgame” and “crowd” and “Crackerjacks.” She had “shame” down. But also, she had a voice like an angel.

So here she is, with her friend Julia, who she met on the bus in L.A.
